Based on the short story by Stephen King, "I Know What You Need" was originally published in Cosmopolitan magazine in 1976, and added to the Night Shift collection in 1978. It is one of the last of Stephen King's Dollar Baby films. The film was crowdfunded and shot on location at the University of Maine, where the story is set, and takes place in 1976.
